An enemy turns for help

One of Syria’s own opposition leaders, Kamal al-Labwani, is standing up for who he thinks are misrepresented in the revolution and demands that the Syrian nation and those serious about a successful revolution to oust Assad turn to its neighbor; Israel. The United States and the West, he says, have been funding arms to the wrong groups and the world has done little to offer real change in standing for human rights. Labwani offers Israel as an ally in the revolution because of its interest in a stable neighbor, one it can trust with a control of large-scale military capabilities. Labwani adds that the Syrian people are ready and by Israel showing interest in the extension of a friendly hand, the Syrian people will welcome a hopeful future for the two nations in terms a future peace deal.

Unfortunately, little is known about Labwani’s credibility and thus we are taking his words with good will. We shouldn’t dive into a direct deal right away, but rather use time and research to find out if his motives and abilities are concrete. However, that doesn’t mean that its not refreshing to see a leader in a country who for decades has been in turmoil and rocky relationships with Israel, show a hand for help.

On campus advocates should shed light on the fact that even whats often perceived as a hateful relationship between different peoples can be a hopeful venture for change and peace. Haters will make accusations that Israel continuously looks for conflict and ignores peace efforts, change Israels brand to one based on realities. Israel want’s peace and is interested in change for the region.
