Syria, a country long at war with Israel, is involved in a bloody civil war in which more than 160,000 people, including both fighters and civilians, have been killed. Especially for anti-Assad fighters, many wounded people lack access in Syria to medical treatment. They contacted their “enemy”, Israel, whom they have been taught since birth to hate. Faced with the decision whether to help not only Syrian noncombatant citizens, but also wounded fighters, Israel has chosen to help. As of May, 2014, Israel had treated in Israeli hospitals more than 700 wounded Syrians
700 people is a small number when compared to the hundreds of thousands of Syrian citizens suffering from the internal Syrian conflict, but it is not a meaningless number. Not in terms of the Syrians whose lives have been saved by Israel nor in terms of the positive light cast on Israel by its decision to help these people. It is not a decision that would be made by the strawman — hateful image of Israel created by its detractors. It is a decision that one would hope and expect an enlightened and caring nation to make. It is the decision that we would expect Israel to make and we are not surprised by it.
Unfortunately for Israel, terror attacks have not been uncommon. Fortunately for the rest of the world, Israeli medical personnel have become experts in dealing with trauma. We expect Israel will continue to treat those who are injured, even if they are from a country that is still at war with them.
