The Israeli Population, Immigration, and Border Authority, PIBA, announced it would soon issue ID cards that will have gender appropriate titles for same-sex parents. Previously, the parents would be registered as either a “father” or “mother”.
This is a big step towards sexual equality in Israel. Though same-sex marriage is not yet legally performed in the state, the government recognizes same-sex marriages performed outside the country. The leaders of the LGBTQ community have found allies in Israeli policy makers such as Justice Minister Tzipi Livni, who officiated a same-sex wedding this past June. As we explained previously, Israel remains an oasis of tolerance in a region in which homosexuality is, for the most part, banned.
